Reading
Everything begins with reading!

At Bay Centre we know the importance of reading competency as the foundation for all academic and life success.  Without reading proficiency, life will continue to be a struggle - at any age.  That's why our professionals have been assessing and teaching reading for over 25 years.

Our reading assessment begins with a thorough intake process (approximately 1 1/2 hours) in which we explore health history, developmental history, educational history, and so on.  There are many factors that can impact a student's ability to read:  labor and delivery difficulties; exposure to prescription or illicit drugs; chronic ear infections; poor academic stimulation; hearing loss, attention-deficit characteristics, learning disabilities, and so on.  With Bay Centre's 360 degree approach to intervention, we are dedicated to knowing as many factors as possible so that an individualized and targeted Action Plan can be created.

We follow the intake process with a full psycho-social evaluation that includes an intellectual and academic assessment, a behavioral checklist that is taken by the parent and teacher, and a reading diagnostic that breaks the reading tasks into 5 processing areas.  This assessment process normally takes 4 hours and is done over 2 sessions.  We consider these assessments to be vital in the understanding and verification of the specific process(es) affecting the poor reading performance.  It is our experience that most programs teach compensatory skills utilizing the strengths of the student.  Our experience has demonstrated that, when the weaker processing area is determined specifically, we are able to remediate the deficit and actualize the student's potential.

Once the assessments are completed, Bay Centre conducts an inter-office, multi-disciplinary staffing for the purpose of reviewing all intake and assessment results, as well as designing an individualized and specific Action Plan.  Following the inter-office staffing, an appointment is set for our parent consult, where we will go over the results in plain English and make whatever program proposal that may be appropriate.  JumpStart2Emagine is our academic program that focuses on reading.  Other academic programs are also offered to fill in other areas defined as necessary to create masterful students.
