"We change the world not by what we say or do, but as a consequence of what we have become."            David Hawkins

Becoming who we are happens automatically.  Choosing who we become is something quite different.

Imagine that you sincerely strive to be the best that you can be.  You start out loving school: your teachers, your classmates, your classes.  But, as time progresses, you find yourself struggling and not understanding why.  You study more than anyone else but it seems to take longer than everyone else.  You find yourself frustrated.  You can't always remember what you just read or it just doesn't quite make sense to you.  You're very smart in math but not reading or social studies.  Or, you're smart in reading but not good in math.  Everyone seems to think you're just not trying hard enough.  You find yourself getting mad or even just getting to the point that you just want to give up.  It's not fun anymore and you're just tired of trying.

That's what life is like for over a third of the population who are experiencing some form of these conditions.  Each of us has our strengths and weaknesses, as children and as adults.  We learn to compensate and to create unconscious strategies that help us get by.  As adults we have terrific administrative assistants who keep us on track.  We buy audio books instead of reading the material.  We have little tricks that we use to help us remember.

Why is it that we understand our cars better than we understand ourselves? What risk factors could become critical?

Doesn't it make sense that we should assess every child as early as possible?  Wouldn't it help to understand their learning style, their personality, and their processing strengths and weaknesses so that their educational experience can be successful from the very beginning?  Wouldn't it be great to have the opportunity to create a baseline and then measure their progress as they move through their academic career so that gaps could be identified quickly and remediated before it created obstacles or the need for compensatory strategies?  Of course, we know that this is the best of all worlds.  Sheer student population numbers are overwhelming to the systems that serve them, which means that students must perform poorly for a long period of time before identification and screening can even take place.  How much is missed by that time?

Learning Disabilities can be identified and accomodations created to insure academic success.
