"People are not your most important asset. The RIGHT people are."
Jim Collins
What kind of leader are you?
Psychologists and business professionals have studied leadership and leadership styles for many years. This research has led to the creation of many leadership style inventories and assessments, the result of which can be confusing to a leader who wants to understand how they lead. Just a few of the style descriptors are as follows: autocratic, bureaucratic, democratic, laissez-faire, visionary, coaching style, idealist, creative, corrective, affiliative, transactional, transformational, commanding, pacesetting, change, intelligence, pedagogical, servant, bridging, purposeful, innovator, mentor, synthesizer, and many more.
How, then, do you know what kind of leader you are?
Bay Centre subscribes to the leadership philosophy that today's leader must have well-rounded strengths in all the leadership styles. In fact, leadership is more about situations as opposed to personal preference.
There are at least 3 factors that influences which style a leader generally chooses.
- the leader's personal background: their personality, knowledge, values, ethics, and experiences
- the staff being supervised: their differerent personalities and backgrounds
- the organization: it's needs, traditions, values, philosopy, and focus
Dr. Quin Mills from the Harvard Business School has defined the distinctions between leadership, management, and administration in the following ways:
"Leadership is about a vision of the future and the ability to energize others to pursue it." "Management is about getting results and doing so efficiently so that a financial profit or surplus is created."
"Administration is about rules and procedures and whether or not they are being followed."
Today's leaders must function in all of these arenas in whatever style works for the current situation.
